Chapter 15: How to make dry brushing part of your routine

Dry brushing is a simple body-care ritual with an immediate feel-good effect. The rhythmic movement helps awaken the senses, while the bristles gently lift away surface buildup to leave skin feeling softer, smoother and visibly refreshed.

Rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, dry brushing has long been practised as a way to energise the body. The massage-like action may temporarily stimulate surface circulation and complement the body’s natural lymphatic flow.

Regular exfoliation also helps remove the dull, dry cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface. This creates a more even texture and prepares the skin for the body care applied afterwards, helping lotions and oils spread more smoothly and effectively.

When dry brushing becomes a regular habit, it boosts the effectiveness of the skin-care routine that follows, allowing moisturisers to absorb more deeply, says Celia.

ALLEVEN´s Detox Brush with flexible bristles feels stimulating without scratching the skin. Softer bristles are particularly important for delicate areas such as the chest and neck.

Dry brushing can feel naturally energising, making it ideal before a morning shower. It can also become part of a slower evening ritual before a bath—the best time is simply the one that works consistently for you.

Step 1: Begin at the feet and brush upwards using long, controlled movements. Work gradually over each section, spending approximately three to five minutes on the entire body.

Step 2: Continue with the arms, beginning at the hands and moving towards the shoulders with short, firm strokes.

Step 3: Across the abdomen, use gentle clockwise circles, following the natural contour of the body.

Step 4: Brush the back using longer movements, working towards the centre and then upwards towards the shoulders.

Step 5: Reduce the pressure around the chest and neck, where the skin is thinner and more sensitive.

Step 6: Follow with a shower or bath to rinse away loosened surface cells. While the skin is still slightly damp, apply our nourishing Precious Body Oil to replenish moisture and leave it soft, supple and luminous.

Avoid using excessive pressure: the skin may appear lightly flushed, but it should never feel sore or irritated. Do not dry brush over broken, inflamed, sunburned or highly sensitive skin.

To protect the skin barrier, avoid combining dry brushing with chemical or grain-based exfoliants during the same routine. It is also preferable to shave on a different day. If both are performed together, finish with a gentle, comforting Oil or moisturiser.
